First given in Genesis 32:28 to Jacob:

After the failed Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 AD, Emperor Hadrian renamed Judea “Palestina” to sever Jewish identity. He banned Torah study and circumcision, and built a pagan temple on the ruins of the Jewish Temple.
Yet the people still called themselves “Am Yisrael”—the People of Israel.
In 1948, the reborn nation reclaimed its biblical name: Israel. Not Judah. Not Zion. But Israel—a testimony of God’s covenant endurance.

Hebrew is the language of Moses, David, Isaiah, and the Prophets.
Even when Jews spoke other languages (Aramaic, Ladino, Yiddish), Hebrew remained sacred—the language of prayer, Scripture, and covenant.
No other ancient people has brought their biblical language back to life for daily speech.
