Romans 12 – Living Sacrifice, Loving Body, Overcoming Evil
Romans 12 – Living Sacrifice, Loving Body, Overcoming Evil
Theme Verse:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” – Romans 12:2
⸻
1. True Worship Means Dying to Self (vv. 1–2)
“I appeal to you… by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice…”
Paul roots our obedience in the mercies from chapters 1–11. Not legalism, but love.
Living sacrifice echoes:
•
Psalm 51:17 – “A broken and contrite heart… you will not despise.”
•
Galatians 2:20 – “I have been crucified with Christ… the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God.”
•
Luke 9:23 – “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily.”
Transformed by the renewing of your mind
•
Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things that are above.”
•
Philippians 4:8 – “Whatever is true… think about these things.”
•
2 Corinthians 10:5 – “Take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
This is how you test and discern God’s perfect will (Romans 12:2).
⸻
2. Humility & Gifted Service in the Body (vv. 3–8)
“I say to everyone… not to think of himself more highly than he ought…”
Proverbs 3:7 – “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord.”
James 4:6 – “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Spiritual gifts are given by grace and must be used faithfully:
•
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 – Varieties of gifts, same Spirit.
•
1 Peter 4:10 – “Use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
•
Ephesians 4:16 – The whole body grows when each part works properly.
Each gift in Romans 12 is echoed in Scripture:
•Prophecy –
1 Corinthians 14:1–3
•Service –
Acts 6:1–4 (deacons)
•Teaching –
2 Timothy 2:2
•Exhortation –
Hebrews 10:24–25
•Generosity –
2 Corinthians 9:7
•Leadership –
1 Timothy 3:4–5
•Mercy –
Micah 6:8
⸻
3. Marks of a True Christian (vv. 9–21)
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” (v.9)
John 13:35 – “By this all people will know… if you have love for one another.”
1 Peter 1:22 – “Love one another earnestly from a pure heart.”
Rapid-fire imperatives in vv. 10–13:
•
Philippians 2:3–4 – “In humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
•
Hebrews 13:1–2 – “Show hospitality to strangers… some have entertained angels.”
•
Colossians 4:2 – “Be constant in prayer.”
“Bless those who persecute you…” (v.14)
Matthew 5:44 – “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
1 Peter 3:9 – “Do not repay evil for evil… bless, for to this you were called.”
“Live in harmony… do not be haughty…” (v.16)
Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction.”
James 3:17 – “Wisdom from above is peaceable, gentle, open to reason.”
⸻
4. Overcome Evil with Good (vv. 17–21)
“Repay no one evil for evil… live peaceably with all”
Matthew 5:9 – “Blessed are the peacemakers.”
Proverbs 20:22 – “Do not say, ‘I will repay evil.’ Wait for the Lord.”
“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” (v.19)
Deuteronomy 32:35 – God alone is judge and avenger.
2 Thessalonians 1:6–8 – God repays with affliction those who afflict His people.
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him…” (v.20)
Proverbs 25:21–22 – Coals of conviction, not cruelty.
Luke 6:35 – “Love your enemies, do good… and your reward will be great.”
**Romans 12 ends not with survival — but with supernatural victory.
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (v.21)
