Has God Forgotten His Promise to Abraham?
Some say the Abrahamic Covenant has already been fulfilled. Others claim the New Covenant replaced it. And many wonder—does modern Israel still matter to God?
⸻
1. The Abrahamic Covenant: Irrevocable, Everlasting, Unbreakable
God made a binding, unconditional covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12, 15, and 17. It includes three major promises:
LAND – “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.” – Genesis 15:18
SEED – “I will make of you a great nation… and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” – Genesis 12:2–3
BLESSING – The ultimate fulfillment is in Christ: “Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring… who is Christ.” – Galatians 3:16

The Mysterious Covenant Ceremony: God’s Unilateral Oath
In Genesis 15, Abraham prepares the covenant the traditional way—by cutting animals in two. Normally, both parties would walk between the pieces, symbolizing mutual obligation and the curse of breaking the covenant (Jeremiah 34:18).
But something shocking happens:
“When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch
passed between these pieces.” – Genesis 15:17
Only God (symbolized by the fire) passes through.
Abraham is asleep (v.12). This shows the covenant is entirely God’s responsibility. It’s unilateral.
⸻
2. Does the New Covenant Replace It? No.
The New Covenant is fulfilled in Jesus and extended to Gentiles—but it does not cancel God’s promises to Abraham.
Paul says it plainly:
“The law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God.” – Galatians 3:17
“Christ became a servant… to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs.” – Romans 15:8
Both covenants operate side by side:
One doesn’t replace the other—they complement God’s overarching redemptive plan.
⸻
3. Has the Abrahamic Covenant Already Been Fulfilled?
Some point to verses like:
•Joshua 21:43–45 – Israel received the land
•1 Kings 4:21 – Solomon ruled from the Euphrates to Egypt
But that was:
•Partial (never all the land in Genesis 15:18–21)
•Temporary (lost quickly after Solomon’s reign)
•Conditional on obedience under the Mosaic Covenant—not the Abrahamic
God calls His covenant with Abraham “everlasting”:
“And I will give to you and to your offspring… all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession.” – Genesis 17:8
“He remembers his covenant forever… the covenant that he made with Abraham.” – Psalm 105:8–11
And what about this?
“I will plant them on their land, and they shall never again be uprooted out of the land that I have given them.” – Amos 9:15
That never happened in Israel’s ancient history. It’s yet future.
⸻
4. Does Modern Israel Still Benefit from the Abrahamic Covenant?
Even in unbelief, Israel remains God’s chosen people:
“As regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” – Romans 11:28–29
Israel’s regathering in 1948 and beyond is not random—it’s divine.
“I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land.” – Ezekiel 36:24
Yes, the spiritual awakening is still coming (Zechariah 12:10), but the physical restoration is already in motion.
⸻
5. The Final Fulfillment: The Millennial Kingdom
The Abrahamic Covenant will be fulfilled during the Millennial Kingdom:
This future, physical reign is where all the promises come together—land, seed, and blessing, under King Jesus.
⸻
God Has Not Forgotten His Promise to Abraham
The Abrahamic Covenant is:
•Still active
•Not replaced by the New Covenant
•Not fully fulfilled—but will be
To deny it is to ignore Scripture, history, prophecy—and the very nature of God’s faithfulness.
